This release marks the return of American conductor Joshua Rifkin to the world of Renaissance music performance after a pause of several decades. Rifkin has revolutionized the performance of composers from Bach to Scott Joplin, but here his presentation and performances, with the eight-voice all-male Dutch group Cappella Pratensis, draw on and synthesize recent insights of others. - All Music Guide

"This glorious disc confirms Yevgeny Sudbin as one of the most searching and inspired of today’s pianists. Each recording that he produces in his continuing series for BIS seems to reveal a new facet of his thought processes and his interpretative intelligence." - The Telegraph

Following their triumphant Casals Encores disc, Alban Gerhardt and Cecile Licad are reunited for Faurés music for cello and piano. The two cello sonatas are among the masterpieces of the cello repertoire, looking back to the 19th century but also with an edginess that may well reflect the time in which they were writtenduring and immediately after the First World War. Remarkably, Fauré was in his seventies by the time he wrote them. Theres some debate as to how fast the last movement of the First Sonata should go so Alban Gerhardt has recorded two alternative versions, to be programmed to the listeners taste. Alongside the sonatas are some of Faurés most seductive bon-bons, including the famous Sicilienne and Élégie, and the so-called Papillon (so-named at his publishers insistence, much to Faurés annoyance who hated fluffy titles).

Monica Huggett has produced numerous best-selling and acclaimed recordings for Avie, notably the Grammy®-nominated Bach Orchestral Suites (AV 2171) which made the Top 10 of Billboard's Traditional Classical Chart. This ear-opening version which - Monica claims - restored Suite No. 2 to its original instrumentation, placing the solo line with oboe rather than the more commonly-heard flute. She makes a similar case with her new recording of Bach's St. John Passion, placing oboes where we typically hear flutes, arguing convincingly that Bach's original score was produced during his early years working in Leipzig where flutes were unavailable to him.
Once again, Monica is aided and abetted by baroque oboist Gonzalo X. Ruiz, who states, "The omission of flutes gives the St. John Passion a less galante feel for Bach's music that developed in the mid-18th century and restores a trim sound, in line with most orchestral music of the time. It retains, however, an undeniable richness of orchestration owing to the uncommon string instruments in the arias."
Monica continues, "There have been many scholarly discussions about the forces originally used for the St. John Passion, including the suggestion of performing it with one voice or instrument to a part. The most satisfying performances in my personal experience have been those involving a small chorus matched with a small orchestra. I have chosen, therefore, to have about an equal number of instrumentalists alongside a group of twelve singers capable of both solo and consort singing, as Bach would have had in Leipzig."
Monica leads the Portland Baroque Orchestra, the fourth-largest period-instrument ensemble in the US, where she has been Artistic Director since 1995. Joining the orchestra is Portland-based choir Cappella Romana and baroque specialist, English tenor Charles Daniels as the Evangelist.
Full sung texts in the original German with English translations are included in the CD package.

Winter Words is the solo debut release by American tenor Nicholas Phan. The recording was made in the wake of a recital tour in 2010-11 which culminated in his Carnegie debut at Weill Hall. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and an alumnus of the Houston Grand Opera studio Nick has performed with the opera companies of Los Angeles and Seattle, symphony orchestras of Atlanta, St. Louis and San Francisco, and the Marlboro, Ravinia and Edinburgh Festivals, among others. He sang in Stravinsky's Pulcinella with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Pierre Boulez which was nominated for a Grammy Award. Nick presents a deeply personal perspective of Britten's music, encompassing his own performing experiences to audience reaction. He says: "I've been a fan of Britten since playing his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra with my youth orchestra in Detroit as a teenage violinist. But my great devotion to his music increased to an obsession when an excellent pianist and good friend asked if I'd perform with her at a small university in Missouri. She suggested Winter Words, saying, "I think these would sound really great in your voice, and I've wanted to play them for ages, so indulge me." I researched and played through Britten's settings of Hardy's poems and before long, I was hooked." Approaching the performance in a small Midwestern town with some trepidation ("how would they react?"), Nick describes the audience's overwhelmingly positive response: "my favourite piece on the program ... the most lasting impression." Such is the enduring quality of Britten's sophisticated yet direct song writing, of which Nick is a leading torch-bearer.
